Show Studio... Re-Bel

Chromicolor

Chromicolor® ink creates color change directly on a product's surface. Imagine your logo changing color when a beverage reaches just the right temperature, now that's cool. Or a product's temperature indicator goes from blue to red to let you know the heat is on. That's a hot idea. Or a shirt that changes color with the touch of a hand. Now that's so hot, it's cool.

Chromicolor® ink can give a product the capability to reveal a hidden message. And don't tell anyone, but Chromicolor® ink is even being used in the security industry. We'd tell you more, but it's top secret.

The applications for color change are never ending, ranging from the fanciful to the functional. And with vision and imagination, you'll find there's a rainbow of bright ideas yet to be explored.

How to create a Smoke Bomb

I was totally inspired by 'The Smoke Drawing Workshop' during last thursday class, and somehow Ninja often carry some smoke bombs, here is a description on how to create a smoke bomb. (Pictures from The Smoke Drawing Workshop will post in few days, be patient...)

Simple Smoke Bomb (Warning: Please keep out of children.)

Materials:
Saltpeter (Drug Store)
Sugar
Stove
Nonflamable Pot or Pan

1. Mix equal parts of the sugar and saltpeter together
2. Pour into your NONFLAMABLE pot or pan.
3. Turn on stove with the pot full of mixture(low flame)
4. Make sure to stir constantly, after a while of cooking it will begin to turn into a liquid gum sorda substance with a light brown or yellowish color. Put in chosen contianer (Medicine Bottle) then put in freezer for about 5 min. After you take it out you can light. Do not get inpatient while cooking it, it will take a while for it to turn into a liquid Also it will take a while to light, just keep the flame on the hard substance until you hear a sizzle then set down.
5. Watch all the damn smoke.

What is a Quick Change?

Quick-change is a performance art in which a performer usually a magician, dancer or ice skater changes quickly within a split second from one costume into another costume in front of the audience. This is usually performed under cover of an object like standing in a hoop of fabrica mylar curtained hoop, behind an unbrella, large feather fans, stage smoke or evena shower of glitter. Choreography and dance are usally combined into the performance to make the act more spectacular.

The art of Quick Change is several hundred years old and reaches back as far as the 15th century. The Japanese kabuki theater started with crude performances by a shrine dancer Akuna in the year 1603, although the use of Quick Change was most probably not added until after 1629 when women were banned from performing kabuki.

Since I am doing reseaches on Ninja, it is good that the quick change trick has a Japanese history background.

Relationship between Ninja and The Art of Hypocrisy

How people are hypocritic, they concealed their real motives(Beliefs, opinions, virtues, feelings qualities, or standards) from public, to complete or obtain their final target. The hypocrisy concept is similiar to the purpose of a ninja. A website called Martial Arts Gear, telling us that being 'Invisibility' = being 'Normal', invisibility is more like a concept, ninja is hidden in public like a spy, waiting for a good chance to complete their assassination - "... Much of a ninja's work was not done while wearing his ninja-yoroi, however. If a ninja needed to gather information or get close to an assassination victim in a crowded place, wearing a black hood was not a good way to stay inconspicuous. The ninja were experts at hiding in plain sight, disguising themselves as priests, dancers, merchants, or farmers. They tried to look as plain and ordinary as possible. If all else failed, there was always a smoke bomb in his bag of tricks!..."

Movability

I already have a general thought on presenting the idea of 'Ninja Invisibility' on a garment, research on optical illusion (Shape, Layer and Colour). However it is hard to present the idea of 'Speed of Ninja'.

Thinking to apply movability on garment. Looking at how umbrella open and kinetic sculpture by Theo Jansen

Playing Tricks with your eyes.

Research on optical illusion, presenting the invisibility of Ninja.

Looking at a sheet of fabric, the brightness and contrast of the shadow is changing while the shape of the fabric is transforming. Thinking about the movement, try to apply the fabric 'Flying Technique' on a garment, to present the movement of a Ninja.

Ninja

The invisibility and speed lead me think of Ninja. A Ninja or Shinobi (忍者) was a covert agent or mercenary of feudal Japan specializing in unorthodox arts of war. The functions of the ninja included espionage, sabotage, infiltration, and assassination, as well as open combat in certain situations. Ninja presents how people well play with hypocrisy, the dangerous, treacherous and unscrupulous are hardly to notice and see. Ninja is well present the idea of hypocrisy.

"Since any opaque object absorbs light, it produces a shadow in the space behind it. If the source of light is a point, an opaque surface cuts off all light striking it, producing a shadow of uniform density. An example is the casting of hand shadows on a wall.

If the source of light is larger than a point, the shadow varies in intensity, creating the umbra and penumbra. The former is that portion from which all rays of light are obscured, while the penumbra is the lighter part, not entirely hidden from the observer.

Spotlights, hand torches, and so on, are points of light. The latter of the two shadows is the more frequently encountered. Thus, in Ninjitsu, we strive to remain in the deepest shadow, the umbra, as this offers the best concealment." - Secrets of the Ninja

'Hide Away' The Shadow Part Two

People have read and seen how invisible cloak work in movies or fiction novel, like Harry Potter. What happen if invisibility is existed in real life? Reported by The Times, scientist has successfully developed the invisibility cloaks. The cloaks is tiny, however people cannot see the cloak and the thing that it covered with eyes or using optical machine. I am amazed that how human can create things from impossible to possible, it is believed that within 10 years time , scientists are able to create a cloak that can cover a human body, just like the one in Harry Potter.

Shadow Dance

Created many different objects with human body silhouettes.

Magic & Illusion

Though Wikipedia, Hypocrisy is the act of persistently professing beliefs, opinions, virtues, feeling, qualities or standards that are inconsistent with one's actions. Hypocrisy is thus a kind of lie.

Clothes Change Magic

A successful businessman, politician or celebrity is well practiced on Hypocrisy. It is a subject, an art form about falsify and treacherous, just like playing tricks and illusion in front of their target audience.

Does everything exist in the world has a shadow?

We can see an object because when a beam lights on an object, the object itself reflects light to our eyes, consequently we can see the colour, the shape and the shadow of an object.

There is a few methods that the shadow can 'hide away' from the object.

Speed
If the object moves fast enough, the shadow would be hard to notice.

Bruce Lee Speed Demonstration

For those who only know the 'Comedian Kungfu' guy Jackie Chan, I am going to give a little introduction on Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee is a great martial artist, but also an actor and philosopher. He invented Jeet Kune Do (A type of Martial Art), which is strongly focus on speed, and how body should flow like water (water is soft, but it also can crush). The video was taken in late 1960s, the video has poor quality and its in slow motion, but you can still clearly see how fast Bruce Lee can punch. It is claimed that no one can actually see clearly how he starts his punch, until they felt his fist was actually in front of their face after second.

Bruce Lee has clearly shown it is possible to hide away the shadow when an object has reached to a certain speed.

Mask of Lady Justice

Making the mask reflects how The North's (The wealthy and technologically advanced nations of the world) government, having two faces in front of the public: Making lots of promises to their voters/people, including keeping a healthy relationship with other countries, ensure their people welfare, an impartial judge on law or political views, and lend an impetus to an authentic universal suffrage.

The North is good at wearing a mask of Lady Justice, visually telling people they are fairness. However the reality is hidden under the shadow (All the smokes, marks and residues) behind the mask.

They betray their voters, forget all the promises, ignoring the voice from their people, or even start a war with other countries.

From time to time, public media and experiences, the public starts to see more on the reality, the truth of what they have done. The mask of Lady Justice is starting to collapse and appearing holes, they will use more flour to cover the holes they have made, and keep wearing the ugly mask in front of their people.
